A practical guide to learning to drive

Start with the steps that make learning possible.

This guide brings together the main licence, theory and practical test tasks, with links to official services and learning resources.

Check your eyesight before applying

You must be able to read a number plate from 20 metres. If you cannot, arrange an eyesight test and tell the DVSA when applying for your driving licence.

Apply for a provisional licence

Applications can be made from age 15 years and 9 months. Car driving can begin at 17, or at 16 for someone receiving the enhanced rate of the mobility component of PIP.
